Alumni Small Grants Fund Selection Committee

It’s been a really exciting couple of months. Following the official launch of the Alumni Small Grants Fund in January we carried out the very first selection committee to assess applications from our project partners.

For those that are not aware, the International Service alumni board have set up a small grants fund to provide International Service returned volunteers with a channel through which they can continue to fundraise for in country project partners. Project partners are able to apply for a one-off fund of up to £250. Applications are assessed and funds awarded every quarter. Returned volunteers are invited to the selection committee and assist in assessing applications.

Last month, Jo Baker and I, along with newly returned volunteers, Sam (Bolivia) and Lucy (Burkina Faso) met in London to consider the applications we received. In total there were 6 applications, with each country in which International Service work submitting an application.

After 4 hours of deliberation, we decided to award RAINS (Ghana), Kabeela (Burkina Faso) and Tigoung Nonma (Burkina Faso). RAINS requested funds to assist in the cultural performances and drama productions that are put on in order to provide young boys and girls with sexual education. Tigoung Nonma wanted assistance in purchasing new catering equipment to enhance their catering capabilities whilst Kabeela requested funds to purchase a shea butter mixing machine. All projects are far-reaching and this small injection of funds should hopefully go a long way. Keep an eye out for photographs of the money being awarded coming soon!

A big thank you to everyone who has donated to the small grants fund, if you would like to support us visit our just giving page www.justgiving.com/Small-Grants-Fund-Alumni . We look forward to seeing the impact that these funds will hopefully make to our project partners, look out for progress updates on facebook and twitter.

Our next round of awards will take place mid-July. We continue to encourage all project partners to apply. Just contact smckenna@internationalservice.org.uk for more information.
