Challenging ourselves to change the world - #GoTheDistance

After months of training, followed by our #GoTheDistance challenge in July, 6 members of our Alumni Board completed the UK’s most beautiful 10km run in York on Sunday 3rd August, rounding up what has been a summer of fantastic sporting, and fundraising, effort!

I am pleased to announce that in our #GoTheDistance campaign, our first official fundraising campaign to raise money for the Small Grants Fund, we logged a grand total of 3,117kms!

How far did we go?

Despite not reaching our ambitious goal of travelling 17,000kms+ to 'visit' all International Service projects in Bolivia, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Palestine, our 3,117km total distance logged in July took us nearly a quarter of the way there. We logged enough distance to ‘travel’ from the International Service office in York, across the Mediterranean sea, to within 600kms of Palestine (approx 3,700kms away) – a very good effort!

We would like to say a BIG thank you to the 30+ people who took part in our #GoTheDistance challenge. This number includes ICS alumni, International Service staff, friends, family and colleagues who logged their distances with us, either walking, running or cycling, throughout July! You can check out our distance leader board here.

And the winners are...

I am pleased to announce the results of our prize draw, with two winners each receiving £20 GoOutdoors vouchers!

Rob Harding from Bristol who travelled the top distance overall (including cycling)
Tracy Rowlinson from London who travelled the top distance (excluding cycling)

Our Alumni Board have also decided to award a prize of £10 to Palestine return volunteer, Molly Tresadern. Who was storming ahead on the leaderboard for almost the whole month, before breaking her toe! Well done Molly, we hope this is some consolation.

How much did we raise?

Finally, and most importantly, through funds given to take part in our #GoTheDistance challenge and funds donated to support Alumni Board members running the York 10km, we raised a grand total of £400 for the Small Grants Fund. We're all really grateful for the support we’ve received and excited as this means we have sufficient funds to award grants in the third quarter of 2014.

On behalf of all Alumni Board members I would like to say thank you again to everyone who helped us train and at the same time support our Small Grants Fund.

We look forward to going the distance again next July, and beating our total distance travelled… watch this space!
